PARADIM Co-Director Darrell Schlom, of Cornell University, has received the 2021 John A. Thornton Memorial Award and Lectureship from the American Vacuum Society (AVS). Schlom was recognized for his pioneering contributions to the development of molecular-beam epitaxy for growing complex oxides, and for applying the technique to create materials with exceptional properties.

The award honors outstanding research or technological innovation in areas central to AVS, including thin films and plasma processing. It is conferred biennially and includes a cash prize, commemorative plaque, and honorary lectureship at the AVS International Symposium.
